It takes SPECIAL oil.

The clutch discs in the limited slip differentials require special friction additives.

Call your Ford dealer to make sure you put the right gear oil in it.

Also it depends on the cut of the pinion and ring.
Hypoid Gears and require special oil also.
Hypoid Gears are similar in their general form to bevel gears. However, Hypoid Gears operate on non-intersecting axes. Hypoid Gears have spiral teeth that are curved and oblique, with axes which may be at either right angles or otherwise.

Arrow’s size range and capabilities for Hypoid Gears are provided in the table below.

Maximum Pitch Diameter – 28”
Diametral Pitch – 1.5 – 48
Face Width – 5
Unground Tooth – AGMA Q9
Ground Tooth – AGMA Q13

He's trying to rip you off. Replacing the entire rear end wouldn't cost $1500. They all seep a little. Replacing the pinion seal is only an $80 item, and the axle seals would be about $200. Fix the seals and fill it with synthetic differential oil. Don't let that crook touch it. I'm still wondering what kind of "belt issue" costs $250 to fix.

The vehicle is mnore thaqn five years old so it should be drained and new oil put in. Take it to a good garage and have them pull the cover and remove the old and clean the crud out and put in new oil. This should be done at least every five years. If it is a manual transmition the the same. If it is an auto mattic then every two years.

read the manual.

75W140. There is a tag on the rear diff cover that specifies this information as well as the ratio (3.73 or 4.10), and whether it is an open or locking differential. If it's a locking differential, "friction modifier additive" has to to added as well.
