'Gods & Generals' is a fairly accurate portrayal of the Civil War, but I would stay away from 'Gone With The Wind.'

It's a romantic view of it. It doesn't fully portray the horror and insanity that was the south during the Civil War, especially in the later years. You have to remember that the movie was made in 1939, and realism wasn't the thing back then, just good drama. I agree, it's a good movie, but not exactly accurate. 'Cold Mountain' is a little more accurate, along with the movie 'Andersonville', which is about a Confederate prisoner of war camp of the same name.

The story was partially based on the family folklore of the author's family. So it is somewhat an accurate portryal of antebellum life and the experience's of a southern belle within allowable literary license of a novel.

Grossly overrated movie. Peaks far too soon, in the burning of Atlanta. After that - who gives a stuff about the rebuilding of Tara?
Plus, it has the ideology of a Klan pamphlet.
