I think it's harder to be funny for a full hour. Drama's unfold pretty slowly and have more twists. Comedy story lines are really simple, usually.

I believe it is harder to create a comedy so it is better to keep it short & sharp (before the jokes get too old!).

The only TV comedy I know that lasts one hour is Spaced.

because comedies can only fit so many jokes before it seems like they're trying to hard. Dramas have alot of stuff going on, so they need a whole hour, i guess.

GOOD QUESTION. I WOULD THINK THAT A COMEDY (EVEN A GOOD ONE) WOULD HAVE TROUBLE KEEPING YOUR ATTENTION FOR MORE THAN HALF AN HOUR....WHERE DRAMAS NEED AT LEAST AN HOUR TO TELL A GOOD STORY.

I live dramas every day. Don't need it on TV.
Society lacks enough humor.
'Boston Legal' in 1 hour is absurd, topical and clever.
'Two 1/2 Men' should be 1 hour....
Why? I don't know, or care. It's only show business.

Good question, I really don't know but it would be nice if comedies were a hour long.

I've wondered that myself, because I'll JUST be getting into my favorite comedies and they're over. You really couldn't solve a case (like in Law & Order) in 30 minutes.

Extreamly good question there..... i always thought that television soap operas to be a bit too weak for an hour long.... most definatly needs to be alot shorter and comedy shows such as scrubs king of queens need to alot longer ^_^

Comedy is in my opinion the most difficult to write for. The pace has to be just right to keep it funny. I could be wrong.
