You might like Anne Sebold's books, Lucky (memoir of the author's rape the last day of her freshman year of college) and The Lovely Bones, told from the point of view of a 14 year old murder victim.

Maybe Augusten Burrough's memoir Running with Scissors. Talk about strange and crazy. Wow. I haven't read his others, but many seem to enjoy them.

Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is another good one. Powerful story of a boy growing up in Afghanistan before the Taliban, what happens when they take over and what he and his father do after. There are a number of other situations that come up. I could "see" much of this book as I read it.

I know many also recommend Life with Pi by Yann Martel. I started it, but have misplaced my copy.

Go to Amazon.com and search:
"Lost from Atlantis Book 1" - Book 2 is going to be out in the next 6 weeks or so, Book 3 is written and in editing and will be out sometime in the next few months.
"Death by MURDER David Lindsay" - you have to search that way or it won't come up. There's lots of sex in that one.
"Super Spaghetti"
And the best part is, for now, they're all FREE. You can read them with Kindle Unlimited - if you don't have Kindle Unlimited Google how to get a free trial, and all those books are free. They can be read online, with a free Kindle phone app, or on a Kindle.

George RR Martin's Song of Ice & Fire series. I have one of my employees hooked on it now. Even if you are not particularly into fantasy the writing is fantastic!
