Well, everyone has pretty much said 'none' BUT at the San Fran airport in April, the gentleman next to me told me his Motorola had 'Global roaming'. I CANNOT confirm this to be true, but you may want to ask the shops that carry it. Wouldn't hurt. The reason he mentioned it is because I use the Japanese version M702iG Motorola

And I was making a call. After, he asked about it being Japanese or American..... The Japanese version has Global roaming and when I reach Southern CA it automatically hooks me up with Cingular. So, you may want to check it out, BUT like I said, I can't confirm his comment to be true. He may have just said that. (?) It works with the Japanese versions though.
Hope this might help you!
~I go from Tokyo home to California often and use this Motorola (and Softbank) with global roaming.

None..

You need the 2100 Mhz band.. American phones are 850Mhz and 1900Mhz

The Foma M1000 is a good model. It is tri-band 900Mhz, 1800Mhz, and 1900Mhz and has 3G on the 2100Mhz band. It is missing the 850Mhz band (if you have Cingular; you'll be ok with T-mobile as they don't use it)) and of course you will not be able to get highspeed 3G data speeds as the US doesn't use the 2100Mhz band (Only Europe, and Asia use this).

None of the standard phones work. The satellite up-link phones work anywhere in the world. But those cost thousands of $$$.

None,
I recommend getting a pre-paid phone where you wont need a contract. either that or dont get one at all.

Some popular Phone companys that have pre-paid:
Au
Soft Bank
DoCoMo
