You cannot format your primary drive while the OS is running you will need to use either a OEM system Restore disk that came wih your system or a Windows Installation CD.

I am assuming you are talking about Windows XP, If you use you OEM place the CD in the Drive and try to boot from the CD. If the system goes to windows you will need to change your Boot Priority from within BIOS. Usually you will see what button to push in the PC startup screens typical F1 or DEL keys

The OEM usually is automated to make thing easy!

If you use an Win XP Install CD, you will have to erase the current partition so that you will not have two version of XP installed on the same partition.

The Windows XP installation disk will then ask you to create a partition to install windows XP and for the size you want to make the partition, normall I use one large partition but that is up to the person who does it.

After the partition size is set windows will format the HDD and begin the OS install.

Byt before you do anything make back up of anything you do not want to loose.

Use your Windows XP Disc or use the OEM Restore discs supplied by your computer manufacturer. If you don't have none of these, I can tell you how to make an OEM CD. Just give more information.

Right click on the hard drive you wish to format...then click format.
If you wish to format your system drive( the drive that has your OS installed )....just insert your installer in the cdrom.
