Einstein performed poorly in the education environment because his thoughts were more complex than more of the learning materials in a classroom. His thoughts were more creative and detailed than during the time of memorization and regurgitation (Traditional Learning) of the time.
His one math teacher wrote years later that "he(Einstein) possessed creative math abilities far beyond the capacity that I understood." So dumb no just a creative thinker.
His thinking was so involved and complex German people said he went into a state of "gudunken vasbuken" (not sure if I spelled it correctly) but is a state of deep thought.

He had learning differences. He learned differently than typical people. That's why he was so smart.
