I haven't heard that saying before but I do know that in true love, the other person is so important to you that they might as well be oxygen.

It's true that being in love is one of the greatest and most intoxicating feeling in the world. While we feel strongly that it is necessary for our survival - because we cannot fathom a life without our significant others, nothing compares to the NEED of oxygen.

Yes, in a way. I think that people need love and attention to grow and thrive. We all need someone in our court rooting for us to win. It makes us feel good and makes us feel like winners. There have been studies and incidences of children in orphanages in Romania who were basically warehoused but not nurtured. The children were packed together but never bonded with a parental figure . This came to light after the overthrow of the government and the rest of the world entered and were horrified at the conditions they found. When the orphans were discovered, a lot of people from the rest of the world rushed in and wanted to adopt them. Not mentioning the horrific physical illnesses some of these kids were found to have attained, some of the orphans who were thought to be physically healthy , were found to suffer from attachment disorder and they acted out inappropriately or were unable to bond with their adoptive families. There were alot of failed adoptions. For these children, love really was as necessary as oxygen. Without the presence of love in their very early years, they became withdrawn, turning inward, unable to trust. Some of these kids became abusers themselves or showed inappropriate actions to get attention in any way they could get it. And they never were taught to love themselves. Some of these kids lived the rest of their lives in the orphanages and who knows what happened to them after that.
So I guess I am addressing the need for love and attention when we are babies and kids, not the physical love or romantic love between adults. About that, I think that it is wonderful to be in love. It's almost like being high when it first happens, when it is more like lust or infatuation. If it's with the right person, it's awesome. If it's not the right person, I'd rather be alone. Do I need love from another person in a romantic way to live or survive? No. I have been in a couple of abusive relationships and if I hadn't left, I may have died. With those men, it wasn't love but a kind of need to have someone and not be alone. I realize now, through the wisdom that sometimes comes with age, that if you love yourself and respect yourself and cherish yourself, unacceptable behavior from others is not what I need to live. They may call it love, but I call it obsession and self-centeredness. Who needs that? I would rather be alone with my pets and my friends and in that way, I am loved by others. But I fully believe that loving yourself is essential, and in that way, love is necessary to live and thrive.
At age 45yr, I married the man who loves me unconditionally, and it is wonderful. If things turned really bad with him and he became physically and emotionally abusive, I don't need him. I can take care of myself. But I waited my whole life to find him and for him to find me, so I pray to my God, who loves me, that I will live the rest of my life with him and that we will love each other forever.
I hope that it's not just a dream. Being in love helps me breathe, like oxygen I guess.
