What are you trying to do? Simple data transefers between computers?
Then the simple thing it to get a serial cable that is made to connect two computers (radio shack or similar), go to ACcessories, Communications, New Connection Wizard. When the wizard starts choose "setup advanced connection".Then follow the prompts and let Windows set it up for you. No messing with network settings and all that.
Once it's made you can save it and the next time you need to connect the two just put the cable back on and your in business.

There is a cable called a Cat 5 crossover cable that will connect the network interface cards in two computers. You need to go to SETTINGS CONTROL PANEL NETWORK to set it up after you cable it.
A better choice is to get a small hub (under $10) and then use straight Cat 5 cables each plugged a computer network card with the other end plugged into the same hub. Then it is like the usual network setup (and if you get a third computer it can go into the same little hub).

Three options:
1 Crossover cable
2 Hub or switch (you will need two straight-through (normal) cables
3 One of the computers may have an "auto sensing" network card if it is new, which allows either a straight-through or crossover to be used

Yes, the crossover cable will do the trick, aslong as you are connecting it via ethernet jacks. you can also use a hub or router to do this.
