I've tried laying on the ground with a sprayer, but it's a nasty job. Is there any easier way?

Easy fix to your problem here. Make a small ramp - less than 6" high out of a block and a 2x4. Drive one side of your mower up on the ramp (raise the deck to its highest level first) and then spray with a hose that has an attachment with a small stream (usually labeled "jet"). After wetting the deck and getting the easy stuff off use a small gardening scoop/shovel to scrape off the rest of the packed grass/debris. Spray with the jet again and you are ready to go.

Also remember...the bearings on the deck need to be re-lubed after you do this so they don't dry out or rust.

You don't mention the brand. Some brands have a clean-out where you can attach a garden hose and run water under it while it is running. However, if the build-up is excessive, you are probably better off to just "drop" the mower deck flip it on its' side and scrape and spray it with a high pressure sprayer or just a plain old garden hose with a spray nozzle. Then reattach it and you are back in business.

If you have a jack stand prop it up for easier reaching. Make sure brake is on. You still have to get on the ground to reach under it but you can use a scraper. It's messy no matter what you do but it's not wet that way.

It depends on the manufacturer. In a snapper mower, you can actually close the gas line and stand on its end. If it a husquvarna or statemans, I don't know of any other way except putting the cut deck as high as you can and scrape it as best you can.

the only other way is to prop the mower up or buy yourself one of those motorcycle jacks so you can lift the mower up safely to clean under the deck
