Read many books, but also read interviews with writers.

If you like a certain style or kind of book, read more books by as many writers in that style as you can get.

One of my favorite writers, Mercedes Lackey, jokingly mentioned an "Idea of the month" club.
To follow up with saying that she is always having so many ideas that they are not the problem.
If you do not have as many ideas, think about a different kind of book, or write blogs or stories before you start your first book.

Just observe the world around you. Take notes about interesting people you see. Try to find something interesting about a boring person.

Many novelists draw from their training. Like Patricia Cornwall is a forensics expert. John Grisham is a lawyer. So it may not be your time to start writing yet. Just keep watching everything around you.
