Like the peace sign - where did that come from?

I'm looking for a website where I can look up signs and symbols. They can be Western, Hieroglyphic, Asian... Just signs and symbols.

The peace sign was invented in 1958 as a symbol for total nuclear disarmament. The man who designed it combined a semiphore for the letter N, one for the letter D, and surrounded it with a circle for totality. I found that info on the net, looking specifically for Peace sign. It was later adopted as a general symbol for peace, by the hippie culture.
The women's encyclopedia of myths and secrets, and The women's dictionary of symbols and sacred objects are both excellent books to learn about symbols in general.
