Deford Bailey

Pioneering Grand Ole Opry star DeFord Bailey has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Harmonica player Bailey was the first African American artist to join the Grand Ole Opry. He was one of the program's first solo stars and often worked on road shows with other Opry acts including Bill Monroe and Roy Acuff. Bailey made recordings in the late 1920s on the Columbia, Victor and Brunswick labels. member 1925

Charley Pride first performed in 1967 but was not asked to join. He was not asked until May 1, 1993 and became the first African American Regular on the Grand Ole' Opry.

Deford Bailey was the first black artist to join the Grand Ole Opry in 1927 it was called WSM Barn Dance and later becamethe Grand Old Opry which I watched with my family as a little girl..My first thought was Charley Pride. But Charlie became a memeber in 1993...much later
