When I was 14, I picked tobbacco and peanuts to save up cash to get a car and video game systems. I have had a job ever since that age. Maybe that is why I get angry whenever I see an 18 year old with no job, demanding his parents buy something expensive for him.

Anyone else feel the same way I do about this?

I am 23 years old now by the way..........

I was "on call" if that counts as working

I have . My first job was as a waitress at a Steak and Eggs restaurant in Illinois! Not only have I worked since I was 14... I have had at least 45 to 50 jobs in my lifetime. Of course this includes temporary, permanent, full time, part time, seasonal and volunteer. Hell, I even had to do community service for atealing a $5 sweater when I was 18! Ok... big mistake. I learned from that experience... trust.

I am 46 years old now by the way...

Good for you to have a work ethic. Its sorely lacking in the generation you grew up in.

As soon as we were able and interested in starting work, my parents had us work in the family clothing store. I started at age 4, stocking Hallmark cards and sweeping floors. By 7 I was selling, doing displays, marking merchandise and cleaning up. By 13 I was buying without assistance, cruising around Cobo Hall's Apparel show picking out accessories for the store. By 15, I started my own business, and paid my way through college. We bought our own stuff too.

Good job working so hard. If I could give you a little advice, try to find a balance in life between work and living, and don't work too hard. At your age, I was working lots, but also out dancing the night away. Enjoy your life, every stage. Its all about balance.

I have worked since I was 14 also. I am 31. However, I totally agree that the youth of today is having the world handed to them on a silver platter, only in terms of material items though unfortunately. They are being denied morals, and good work ethics by their parents who think they are being good to their children. I grew up learning that if I wanted something, I needed to work for the money to get that item. Unfortunately now, the world is full of Paris Hiltons.

My husband was 11 when he started working. He went to job sites with his Dad and learned to do all kinds of things. I started working when I was 13, I went to work with my Mom and cleaned stockrooms for the dept. store in the summers...Why?..Probably the same reason you did. If we wanted anything at all, we had to go to work and earn it. School clothes, cars, etc. My husband always reminds me of when he was in the 8th grade. He worked all summer, weekends and holidays to go on the school trip to Washington DC and sold some of his stuff to thrift stores for spending money on the trip..His family was pis* pot poor. Now, we are 33 and 35. He is a top executive for his company and doing well because of that work ethic. When we look at buying a home, he always knows about the structure of the home because of all that hard work as a kid..I tell you this to encourage you...In 10 years, because of your work ethic and weren't handed stuff on a silver platter, you'll be running a company as well. It's also not as easy for people to "rip you off" once you've worked that hard..you know what people are up to.
I don't give my nephews/nieces money unless they do work for me..They sometimes act like they deserve it. (I don't have children yet, but when I do, we aren't raising spoiled brats). All the best to you...Thanks for a good question.

I started @ 15 to earn some extra cash; my parents still paid for things but anything special I wanted I could save up for and buy even if they didn't want me too then! The power!

I've been working since I was 15, and from that point my parents haven't really paid for anything. I was on my own. The only vacation I have had was when I was very ill and on bed rest - unlike a lot of my friends...

I definitely am feeling you on this one!

(I'm 21 now)

Yes, my son. I had no choice either he would be working while I was at work or he would be all by himself at home at the mercy
of the refrigerator and the TV.
When you reach the age to retire you"ll be glad you did it. I was
a single mother and I felt more at peace knowing that he was
working , away from idleness.

Actually YES! I started working at the age of 14 because I wanted to work and thought that it was cool. What was I thinking!?

Yes, I am 63 now. I have done alright but I often wonder how it would have turned out if I had, as most kids do today, had access to a practically guaranteed education.

I was born to farmer parents. I don't remember not working. Working is healthy for young people because it helps with teaching responsibility and keeping them out of trouble
