I'm decorating the pulpit area of our church as a western town for bible school and I need something to cover most of the deep red carpeting with. I want something that will look like dirt but be durable enough to walk on. I've thought about plain brown craft paper. What ideas do you have?

depending on the amount of material and your budget, suggest your local building center, flooring contractor-- you can get inexpensive astro turf in brown in 12 foot wide rolls that will lay flat cover a huge area quickly and be reused over and over as needed and can be hosed off outside when your done, its easily stored in a roll, takes up minimumspace.

Don't try to walk on fabric or paper. It's a serious tripping hazard. Bring in a brown rug that can't bunch up.

Or, draw some tumbleweeds and cactus on posterboard and anchor it with bricks along the front of the pulpit.

Brown craft paper (like the kind that they use at the post office to wrap around packages)

Burlap

Dye painter's drop cloths brown using tea bags

Sandpaper

Textured brown craft paper

Brown butcher paper

Brown posterboard squares

Brown material, especially felt

Light brown material that is textured

I've even seen churches put down actual sand on top of plastic bags

Good luck to you!

How about brown sheets or blankets? You might check Goodwill first before buying.
