The 256 mb card is more expensive than the 512 so I'm assuming it must be better. I really don't know anything about video cards. I am trying to do slide shows and my computer keeps locking up. I have a Dell XPS 400 with 4 gb of RAM but my video card is only 128 mb.

The 8600 supports DirectX 10, while the 7600 does not. To be honest though, it doesn't seem to me like your video card's specifications would be the reason your computer is locking up during slide shows. It could be a video card driver issue, or something like a bloated Windows registry if it's been a long time since you reformatted and reinstalled Windows.
You can look for the latest video card drivers on these sites, depending on the type of card you have:
www.ati.com
www.nvidia.com
If that doesn't fix it, consider some cleaning utilities such as CCleaner, Advanced System Optimizer, and RegSeeker.
They are available here:

The ram doesn't matter. The 8600 is slightly faster than the 7600.

If you only do slides and your PC locks up, chances are the problem is within your PC or Windows.
4GB of memory, now... you sure about this ? as most Dells never leave the factory with more than 2GB due to the way XP/2000 addresses the memory map, unless you are running 64bit Windows, this may be one of the cause to your problems, as normally Windows requires PCI memory allocation.
