Depending on your budget, existing vehicle, and personal style, either invest in:

-- a good, simple to erect, tent ... a family size 2 or 3 room one would be great, but a smaller one will do the job!

-- an A-frame trailer ... like a pop-up tent, but easier, more compact, and can be towed behind an SUV or minivan. All the comforts of home (cooking facilities, etc.) and waterproof for those inclement weather trips.

Then every weekend, holiday, and vacation time, pack up the kids, the tent or trailer, foodstuffs (cook like you do at home ... it makes it no more expensive than staying at home, re: food), and explore the natural areas around you.

Improved campgrounds (i.e. showers, flush toilets) run $15-25 a night; and basic campsites (running water, pit or flush toilets, no showers) run $7 to $15. There are even places, like in the National Forests and BLM (bureau of Land Management) lands where you can camp free ... but there are no facilities, you haul everything in and back out again.

We did this for years with our 6 kids and the kids love it, and it's a great way to have family and outdoors time on a budget.

P.S. Mom often gets the brunt of the work on these trips ... make sure to get everyone involved in planning and the work involved, and make things as relaxing and easy as possible.

If you live in America and want to go places in America, Southwest Airlines seems cheapist. Or you could go on a train ride to the place, it's cheap, there's good scenery and plus it doesn't take as long as a car ride, there tends to be airconditioning and you can put stuff somewhere long distance.

If you have to ask... well maybe this is not the best time for a trip. Maybe wait.... talk about it and save for a really good trip.
