I am not a psychologist, but it's interesting that your
question is not as much a question "if" as it is
"don't you agree".
Most psychologists are being replaced by social
workers. Psychologists cost some bucks. But you
might find that their personal relationships are as
screwed up as anyone's. If you researched it, I
mean.
...............People have more money than
they have time. I suppose. If you're in a high-paid
profession, you can pay a psychologist to analyze
you. People can work out their own problems.
They have to take a break from day-to-day difficulties,
relatives, family, people in general, stress, and go to
the park or the beach or have their own space for
more than a few minutes of a day. Half a day to be
alone, without the cel or the laptop, whether it takes
once a month or once a week.
.............Actually, I hardly think highly emotional
or immature people need psychologists. They probably
need to disassociate themselves from certain others
and/or change occupations.

I know several physiologists who are total dimwits. One did not know the difference between Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims but set in judgment in multicultural issues, however professed she moved from an area as there were too many immigrants in her area. She refused to watch a n 18 rated movie, or programme, as it may upset her one season world. The same went on to say that she was very well versed immigrant areas, as she worked in an immigrant area, but did not know the Zip code, (Postcode) for the place she worked or the main street which is known as the Golden Mile for all the Indians owning Goldsmith shops. She did not even know that Chicken Tikka Masala, or Indian food was the National dish of Britain. I think largely Psychologist would not be funded but a therapy, but a means for Government to profile people.

Not all psychologists are useless, some are amazing. Textbook psychologists make me really angry though. I once got really mad at one and told them that their textbook freudian bull crap wasn't going to work with me.
The problem is that too many of them haven't had any tragedy to truely allow them to empathize, they read a book, the book says it should be this way, therefore it is. This is not hte case and not everyone fits into a little box, or a textbook. Good therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists use the knowledge they learned in the textbook as a background to help them understand why what they know from experience rings true. They are not afraid to go outside hte textbook and help you see the reality of what is gong on in your life.
For instance, I once compulsively cleaned my house, I asked my therapist why. Instead of telling me what a textbook shrink would say, "Your mother was neurotic about cleaning and would beat the crap out of you for dust on your TV"
He saw the real truth, "You are doing something that is making you feel dirty."
Good therapists go beyond the textbook, they have gut feelings and rationales that allow them to look beyond what some crazy dead guy said years ago.

If they are doing nothing but head nodding and giving textbook comments, then they are not good. If you think that is all every psychologist does you are mistaken. You are right on some parts thought, anything a psychologist can do for you, you could do yourself, it is just that most are blind to the real cause of their difficulty, or need support to make it better.

Psychology is a very new concept , relatively speaking .
Where does their knowledge come from ? Textbooks written by other psychologists !
In other words , their value to the ills of mankind has very limited depth to it & is not utilising the broad based knowledge passed down through previous generations......in many cases the wisdom of older generations passed down verbally because households contained up to 3 or 4 generations.
Now we throw these older folk in homes to get them out of our way & rely instead on some recent graduate with a psych degree & no life experience to set things straight .
How gullible are we ?

The only person who can be of any help to you is yourself. I know that may sound corny but it's true. The only way the psychologist can help is if you believe they are helping, so in turn you are helping yourself. If you find that they don't help you, don't see them. You are the only one that can help.

You already said part of what I was going to say. I went to one after a traumatic experience & it was so easy to manipulate her. She meant well. Occasionally, if it's a good one, they can give you a new perspective.. There was only one I had some respect for......Juan, if you're out there, I miss you!!!!

probably because their patients lack a brain and dont even deserve to live. Those who have lives that are actually valuable can be helped. Im in law school and had a very traumatic childhood and it does help tremendously. But you are going to have to be open to it. If you go in thinking its not going to work, then its not. Thats just my two cents.
