The patch on the right sleeve resembling an "X" is the insignia of the US Eighth Army:

The other patch on the left sleeve is the insignia of the US Fourth Army(then a training army but in 1971 with the US Fifth Army were consolidated as US Fifth Army) :

The rank patches on both the tunic sleeves denote the rank of a Staff Sergeant:

I was in the Korean war from Oct 31.1950 until April 13, 1953. I think you could contact a Veterans of Foreign Wars post in your city and they would be happy to give you this information. I was in the Air Force in Korea and the Army when I was in Italy

The person that said to contact a VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) post gave good advice, also check with the American Legion post near you. Most cities and towns have one or the other, or both. I belong to the VFW and American Legion in a town near me. I am a Vietnam Vet. There are members who will help you find out all about the patches and answer your questions.

He was a Sergeant in the US. army. I`m not familiar with what the red patch represents , probably his unit or division.
Hold onto it for sentimental value.
