I want to copy VHS tapes to DVD using my Magnavox DVD recorder and VCR. I am not trying to pirate; I just want to preserve my VHS tapes before they deteriorate. Many of my VHS tapes are Macrovision protected and when I try to copy them I get a blue screen. I have my VCR hooked up to my DVD recorder and TV. I know there are Video Stabilizers on the market that are designed to disable Macrovision but I want to build my own if that's possible.

It is quite possible if you know some electronics and programming.

What you need is to get a video decoder and a video encoder chip from NXP. Hook up them with the ITU-656 bus. You need a microcontroller to program the two chips with I2C. You just need to ignore the macrovision flag in the video decoder and pass thru the video to the encoder chip.
This is quite a project; however, it can be done if you have the background.

I understand your pain, but copying VHS tapes on a DVD is a waste of time. Even at the best possible recording quality, the movies will look pretty bad, especially a few years from now when you watch them on an HDTV.

If you like those movies so much, buy the DVD (maybe a used DVD from Blockbuster or other rental places).

There are such things as Wedding Videos or the kids from 10 or more years ago which we like to copy and can't because the DVD Recorder thinks they are protected.
I'm not after old crap US movies. Is it possible to buy the video stabilisers somewhere without building them.
