They shouldn't be allowed in schools except for emergency purposes only. Meaning, cell phones could be brought to school but turned off and left in the locker, and not taken out until dismissal time (time to go home) or in an emergency.

Cell phones are distractions for students. Before the advent of cell phones millions of students didn't even have a need for them. So why now? It is a piece of technology that is beneficial when used in the proper sense but could be a disadvantage when not used properly.

I can't really think of any good solid reasons since kids did without cellphones for years and could probably do it again. But if you need it for an essay or a homework assignment then I guess you should just bs it. For example, say that cell phones are needed because students might have an emergency throughout the day and might need to contact someone for help. Also, students might have a particular reason to need to keep in touch with someone, such as their grandmother is dying and they need to keep in touch to see how she is doing.

In case some kid goes nuts in class you can hid under the desk an call 911. Sounds a bit drastic, but sadly this is one of things that has saved lives during any kind of emergency in schools. I am a teacher a see the destraction. But there are advantages and the far out weigh the distractions.

Because ultimately parents are responsible for their children. If the child has a problem either with other pupils or with staff then it is a good thing for the child to have an independant means of calling his or her parents.

It is no use to say that the school will do that because sometimes it may actually be the teaching staff who cause the problem and I do not subscribe to the popular idea that the staff are always right and the pupil is always wrong. My own experience of school life contradicts that idea totally.

They are too distracting. Students can take them to school, but once they are in the classroom they should be turned OFF as a courtesy to the teacher and to other students.
Some cell phones have e-mail capabilities, and you'd be surprised how many students are clicking away, getting answers to test questions, on their cell phones.

They should only be allowed IF they remain turned off during class time. They should only be used in an emergency or after school.

Since 9/11, cell phones have been brought to school by almost everyone. Teachers complain about texting and ringing going off in class, but kids arent going to stop bringing them...teachers cant check students for them unless it goes off. Parents WANT kids to take their phones to school -- If something like 9/11 would happen again, they want their kids to call them so they know they are ok.

There is no reason why they should be allowed in school. In case of emergency, parents can call the school or kids can use the school phone.

They shouldn't be.
They are very distracting, can be used for cheating, can be used for taking and sending inappropriate pictures, and for cyber-bullying.

Most classrooms are equipped with phone lines for the teacher to use in case of emergency and most teachers carry cell phones when land lines are not available.
