Politicians are not pre-disposed to doing what is in the best inrterests of this country. They do what they need to do to get elected.
Social Security is an enormous problem but is considered the "third rail" of politics. Touch it and you are dead.
Fascinating that the Baby Boomers who have been financing this Ponzi Scheme are now due to retire, and low-lifes in Congress have done exactly NOTHING to reform this LOSER of a program for decades. They truly are despicable.
America is falling deeper and deeper into a huge fiscal "black hole," and health care, along with S.S. will contribute mightily to helping bring this country down for decades to come.

It doesn't concern politicians. They'll all be retired when it crashes (except Robert Byrd, who will be 149 years old and still in the Senate; but he won't need it). Why deal with someone else's problem?
The only thing that will make a difference is if younger voters got interested enough to make it a priority, but they don't care what will happen to them in 40 years...
So, it's perfect for the politicians.

One of the reasons is that the Senior Citizens have been told that the Republicans want to take away their social security so they don't want any changes and they represent a large voting block so the politicians don't want to lose those votes.

Bush and the Republicans tried to privatize it in 2005 and got their idea shot down. The Democrats are waiting until they have the presidency in 2009, and will try to get their ideas passed

There are a lot of things that should be on the agenda. It's been overshadowed by the Iraq debate.
