For the 'link' to be a link, it would have to be separate, neh?
Black people and white people are the same species. They exchange genetic material regularly, and have for pretty much all of recorded history. They live in most of the same places these days, and so are subject to all of the same environmental pressures. To talk about them evolving in different directions is almost absurd in the context of evolutionary theory unless something is acting universally on the basis of skin colour.
There are some very few things that do act in this manner... like skin cancer (which would seem to make white people LESS rather than MORE adapted to survival). But I know of nothing - not even racism - that so dramatically affects survival and reproduction that the existance of one or the other race is even vaguely a question.
Nor can you resolve the question well by comparison to other animals. There are a few animals, for example, who are born completely hairless (link 1). This particular photo isn't too different from other examples. As you can see, a typical chimpanzee is both black AND white. Perhaps BOTH black and white people are substantially different in pigmentation from whatever our common ancestor is!

Humans didn't evolve from chimps. Chimpanzees are a recent species much as humans are.
"more evolved" is an often misunderstood term. It is often equated with being a step up, more advanced, or better. However, "better" depends on your environment, and being "more evolved" in terms of being more recent or having changed more, is not synonymous with more advanced, better, or a step up.
Consider this. Chimpanzees have changes more than humans since our respective groups broke away from out last common ancestor. In that sense, chimps can be said to be more evolved than humans.
Modern day Africans may be very different genetically than those Africans from which modern day Africans and caucasians came from. It cannot be assumed that modern day Africans haven't change as much than caucasians. They may have changed more.
Having lighter skin is only a step up in areas where there are low amounts of UV radiation and a lack of food high in vitamin D. Otherwise, the lack of melanin puts caucasians at far greater risk of severe sunburns and skin cancer.
On the other hand, a person who has very dark skin who does not get enough UV exposure and has a diet poor in vitamin D is at a high risk of developing rickets, a painful and debilitating and deforming softening of the bones.
So to answer your question, causasians traits are fairly recent but caucasians can't be said to be more evolved, or even a different link in the evolutionary chain.

Well, I am no scientist, But I think the skin color has to do with the amount of sun the races were exposed to for centuries. The African continent had blistering heat the nordic parts of Europe didn't. Why don't you check that angle. I am pretty sure there is some serious research that has been done along those lines and I think there exists several theories along these lines. -k-

"People came from chimps/apes whatever. We have established that"
More accurately humans came from ape-like creatures.
"Caucasians are the most recent link in the evolutionary chain."
Not white skin necessarily - any lighter skin.

I asked this same question once years ago and here is the answer I got. Africans evolved with dark skin because of the burning sun.

No. You have absolutely no understanding of how evolutionary biology works.
Firstly we do not come from apes, we are descended from a common ancestor. Secondly, racial types adapt depending on the surroundings. White people are white because it suits the climate better. There is no other reason.

Nobody knows for certain about Evolution not even the best scientists all just a theory.
No solid concrete evidence at all, they aproach God with the same logic.
Evolution = a way for scientists to make monkey's of themselves.
All to do with pigmentation of the skin. You can see that if you look at all the regions of the world. The colour just blends into dark brown light brown Middle East then Italy lighter brown then Scandanavia white. You should know this. Also climate, changes the shape of the body over hundreds of years. Look at dogs it didn't take millions of years for a shitsu to evolve from the wolf. lol Scientists get lost up their own backsides with theory, that they just can't prove, useless and pathetic.
When they come face to face with God they are going to wish all their theories were true.

wow you've hit the Nail on the Head.
Jesus was a black man!
or at least an Arab, with dark skin.
and yes i know your question was about evolution.
i just think the bigger issue of where we come from is unimportant compared to why we're here.

you are taking a current knowledge, africans are black TODAY, and applying it to millions of years ago.
Although your theory may be correct, just pointing out that africans may not have been black millions of years ago.
