Why not look around in your local area for kids entertainers and ring them up and ask them what they are charging ?

This is a question that is always asked by child entertainers and there is NEVER an easy answer. There are 2 key factors to consider: 1) What the going rate is in your area. 2) The level of experience. I'm a ventriloquist. When I first started, I had no experience doing parties. I was a teacher that used ventriloquism in the classroom and I had a parent ask me to come and perform at a party they were having. At the time, since I had never done parties before, I simply asked for $25 and to just enjoy the celebration with the kids. I feel that's a fair price for someone who is just doing his first show and getting his feet wet. Parties are not easy gigs to do and I was not sure how my lack of experience would pay off. As time went on, my shows got better and became more involved. I started giving a gift of a puppy version of my dog puppet to the birthday party child, which made my costs go up (so I had to charge more). My shows became better. I would charge $150-$200 for a half hour to an hour show and staying with the kids for a while (about an hour to an hour and a half) after the show. I do not do children shows any more. I do more comedy clubs and bars, so my puppets might likely slip up and say the wrong choice of words. :-) I do have to say it varies a LOT on where you live. My experience can get me more than the kid next door that just learned to talk with a puppet in his hand, but the quality of the show would be much different. I know people in some parts of the country easily making $300-400 for a birthday party and part of the reason is where they live...the market just asks for that. I agree with other posters, however. My favorite birthday parties as a kid was when we got together, opened the presents, then just played and had cake and ice cream.
