hate to be pedantic but there isn't a 'Britsih accent' as such.

The accent that seems to have influenced Australian accent the most is that of the south/ south east region of England.
Other regions of England or Scotland or Wales don't show much trace.

Oz is more nasal, slower and drawn out slightly ( something like the american south) The intonation is different too.they tend to raise the inflection at the end of sentances -regardless if it's a question or not. They also have vowels sound more similar to south africans'.

I am British, and in my experience although many Australians do sound distinctly Australian. There are some which i guess must come from a particular part of Australia, who do sound almost British, their Australian accent; only really shows when they pronounce particular words. If i were to hear them talk, i wouldn't know that they were Australian for sure, rather than British; if they didn't say much. And even a strong Australian accent, is much closer to a British accent than an American one. Its understandable why some American people cant differentiate between the two, in the same way that most British people; cant really tell the difference between American and Canadian accents.

Australians sound like they are sucking helium while talking in an English accent. But I like Australians, just saying what they sound like.
