I just got a hp pavilion dv9335nr notebook PC, and it comes with vista. I have a copy of XP professional w/ sp2 which i got from my college, which i am alomst positive is a full version. i was told i could just plop it in a boom back to XP, but nope. I try rebooting the machine with the XP disk , but it tells me that it can't find any hard drive. Please help. If anyone knows how I can install XP, that would be amazing.

I done this for a customer last month, its not as simple as it sounds.

First, finding the correct drivers is extermely difficult, esp the sound drivers, in order for it to work, it needs the Microsoft UAA drivers, then HP's sound drivers, follow by HP's modem driver, problem is the DV model always seem to have problems installing all of them together, check their forum and you will see.

Secondly, once Vista is on, only way to install XP is to delete the whole partition during the XP install process, and reclaim the hard drive as NTFS.

* added note **
If your model uses SATA drives, its most likely set to SATA-RAID mode, this will make it almost impossible to install XP, as teh SATA-RAID onboard uses Intel's ICH7 drivers, and guess what ? your model doesnt have a floppy drive. If you turn the SATA-RAID off in BIOS, you can install XP without a problem, BUT , you wont be able to install the Microsoft UAA sound drivers, so eitehrway, you will lose.

I did it by creating a XP install CD with the SATA-RAID drivers included.

Its HP models that makes it so difficult, I did many downgrades on Samsung's R20 model, which all went without any problems.

You would need to partition your hard drive as there can be only one Operating System installed on a hard drive. Partitioning your hard drive in half (for example) would give you an extra hard drive on which to install your XP. I have just done it on my desktop. I partitioned my 'c' Drive in half and now I have a new 'h' Drive. The 'c' Drive has Vista and I used Vista's built-in partitioning facility to create the new partition and then I installed XP Pro on the new partition. I've been trying to do it for weeks and then I discovered that the XP I was trying to install was actually an SP1 and it was very sluggish - Setup would suddenly freeze. Then I paid $30 to download XP from an American website. It took them a whole 30 hours to process the Visa payment but finally I got the Product Key with which to carry out the installation. I have absolutely no experience of notebooks and so I don't even know if partitioning can be done on a notebook PC. Good luick anyway

sounds odd. if the CD drive shows up in My computer it should be fine. but if u wanna reformat it because Vista is a little buggy that should be easy too.

Go into Bios should be by holding one of the "F" keys at the HP logo startup when u press the power button on.

In bios set the boot order to CD rom drive first not the harddrive and u can install XP from the cd after you save the changes.

Happy Reformatting.
