Such a broad question...

I am more tempted to answer questions about Criminals with Sociological answers than Psychological answers...

For instance - socioeconomics cannot be ignored...
why do people steal? Sometimes they need to... or are not educated enough to find a better way.

Why do men rape women? Sometimes it is because of anger and jealousy toward women who are now achieving higher status in the workplace...

Why do child-molesters do their thing?
Sometimes it is because they are psycho-sexually crippled and fear being ridiculed by people their own age. Society exascerbates this by fulfilling their fears... They close off to people their own age and want to return to innocence.

Why do people commit murder?
That one is totally sociological because almost every killer has a different reason or motive... therefore you need to talk about broad numbers... why do MOST murders commit their crimes? What is the MOST common type of murder?
Etc.. etc...

I think that when you take society out of the equation - you can't really just analyze the person's psychology and hope to create a one-size fits all profile...
Alot depends on the kind of community they live in and what is thought of as good and bad, right and wrong, normal or weird... etc...

Circumstances and culture has a lot to do with it. When I was a kid it never occurred to anybody to bring a gun to school. We never would have thought of it. Now kids are educated to do it by TV and movies and the six o'clock news.

Also hungry people are a lot more likely to steal than those who are well fed.

Genetically, some people have greater tendency toward aggression.
