You could talk about how black people weren't given any freedom to anything and had no power for quite some time so the invisibility could represent them being insignificant to society.
I don't know how you would relate it to the history of slaves but you could definately talk about how people still treated blacks terribly even after they were "free and equal"
I just read that book for my lit class last semester.

The most beautiful woman ever in DC Comics was Madame Xanadu as she appeared on the first cover of Doorway into Nightmare. She was SO pretty, SO mouth watering, I didn't even notice that she was holding up the tarot of Death. She was suppsoed to be a gypsy fortuneteller and people with horrible supernatural problems just happened to wander into her shop whthn they needed help. She had long silky, glossy black hair wth a bounce to it, violet eyes, long dark eyelashes, full red lips just begging to be kissed, a perfect complexion (not deathly pale, either!) and a slinky black gown that clung to her and caressed her delightful form the way I wanted to... yeah, she didn't have to show a lot of skin to be sexy. She was beautiful and mysterious. She apparently knew the Phantom Stranger from way back, though it didn't seem they were ever involved. (There are others that are sweeter and more personable, but you asked for the most beautiful. Madame Xanadu's beauty and allure were similar to Catwoman's but more mysterious, and she had supernatural abilities.) (The very early Lois Lane, when they drew her like a 1940's movie star, is also hot, hot hott!) Ever since then, I have noticed a lot of women's hairstyling parlors have used a modified version of that DiN cover with MX as an advertising poster. The woman is shown with a 'big' fluffy hairstyle, and full lips, and is shown holding up a card, but it is not shown that it is the Tarot of Death. I think it says something that this image has become sort of used as a beauty-industry standard to tell women 'We can make you look like this'. 14 OCT 07, 1835 hrs, GMT.
