In the United States tarantulas occur naturally
only west of the Mississippi River, mostly in the
southern half of the West. I have seen a
tarantula found in Illinois, but it was either some-
one's escaped pet or it came in on a truck from
the west. (It was found near a large truck stop.)
Large wolf spiders and fishing spiders can be
found almost anywhere in the U.S. There are
not very many kinds of large ones and in most
places the large species are not very common.
There are some medium to large species that
are fairly common in Florida and other southern
states.

Well, the mygalomorph tarantulas are mainly central and southwestern US. Wolf spiders are pretty much everywhere. Non-tarantula mygalomorphs (purse-web or trap-door spiders) are found more or less throughout the US, but are not commonly seen, as they don't usually wander much. Other large 'wolf spider-like' spiders include fishing spiders (Dolomedes) that may live either near water or in the woods, depending on the species, and some of the web-spinners.
