I'm going to a dance soon and I don't know how to dance right.

You can close your eyes and focus an just one instrumental sound.Mostly people focus and feel the sound of the drums.I myself focus on the drum for the basic dance steps and then i also focus on the lead guitar,i use my hip and upper body for the lead guitar.I also like to turn and twirl a lot to the sounds of the guitar.

rock songs are mini styles:
1- the 50's and it's easly dance like toese in the movie GREACE 1978
2- the 60's and the 70's just dance to the beat faster or slow.
3- heavy metal just move your hand and your hair.

I agree with the above, start a mosh pit.
Otherwise, whatever feels right? I went to a prom last night, and my boyfriend and I are horrific dancers, but we just got out there and did whatever worked [even though I have NO rhythm].
Also, ask some friends to teach you? That always works.
