Ok my daughter went out to cut the grass today and came back in saying the lawnmower had a lot of white smoke coming out of a part on the side of the mower. So I went out and started it and there is a silver round thing on the side upper part of my mower that has a lot of white smoke coming out and it smells like it is on fire. I was told this might be the carburetor (sp) but I being a female don't know much about these things lol. I tried to take the carburetor (if that is what it is off but can't. Is there a way to get it off that I am not seeing a bolt or something? Also if you can tell me what could be causing this problem and how to fix it I would really appreciate it.

Ok I found out it is the air filter that the smoke is coming out of. I was told to take it off and clean the filter in gasoline not water. I just can't figure out how to get the air filter off. Can someone tell me how to do that?

That sounds like your air filter. You can replace it or simply take it out, clean it & put it back it. Check the oil & take a look at your sparkplug. It might be fouled. You can clean that also! Look underneath to see if any string has become tangled in your blade shaft. You could have something wrapped around it that is causing your engine to "freeze up" & make it smoke & smell!

Well there are many things that I dont know about the mower.
Removing the carburetor will only ensure that it will not run. If that was what you thought it was.
If that was the exhaust then removing that will not make a difference unless someone spilled directly on it. However removing the exhaust will make it louder and eventually the engine would not run properly without the backpressure the exhaust provides. If it is the exhaust and it somehow had something spilled on it you may be able to clean it off and it will be fine.
My best guess would be that the engine has internal problems with valves not seating right and oil is mixing with the gas.
As far as fixing the mower goes, if you really dont know for sure what the carburetor looks like you should probably not try to fix it. I would suggest taking it to someone who does this for a living or someone you know you can trust to do the work. It sounds to me like the mower would need to be taken somewhere for repairs or replaced depending on how much needs to be done to it. As I said there are different engine types and it could cost more to repair a four stroke than it would a two stroke.
These are just my best guesses given what you have told us online.

First, never clean the filter in gasoline! Use warm water and dish detergent. Then dry it thoroughly and work some engine oil into it. Wring out any excess engine oil and install it back where you got it from. That will likely take care of the smoking problem. If not, buy a new filter and oil it before putting it in.
The filter is inside the airfilter box. Depending on the type of engine on the mower, you either remove the screw holding it onto the carburetor, or pry it off gently with a screw driver if it is the snap-on type cover. If there is not screw visible on the top, it is most likely the snap-on variety.

Sounds like gas in engine oil. This is caused by the float in the carb staying in the open position. The float acts like a on & off switch. Sometimes trash from filling the fuel tank will get into carb causing this problem. The easiest way to fix is to remove the bottom of the carb, also known as float bowl. The float should be visible apon removable. Move float up & down allowing fuel to flush debris from inlet seat. Reinstall float bowl. Drain oil & put in clean oil to correct amount. Remove spark plug & crank engine to remove excess oil & gas from cylinder. Install new spark plug. Engine will smoke only for a min. or so. Good Luck.

Sounds like you may need to change out the oil filter. I have hills in my yard and if I tip my lawnmower wrong, the oil leaks into the filter and it won't run properly. White smoke and sputtering. The filters are about $5 at Home Depot.
