I asked this q before. All I got is that it is an assist. I know but why a Dime? Dime is 10 right...

The term is an inner city slang. In the past, a phone call was a dime and not a quarter and thus the term "dropping a dime" meant calling someone. So when a player hookups with a teamate, he drops a dime.

We measure on a scale of 1-10 a dime being worth 10 is considered a perfect pass. Drop a dime= Drop a perfect pass

Drug dealers call a $10 bag of crack a dime.
Perhaps when a dealer passes the crack to the buyer, and the buyer takes it and "scores", it's compared to an "assist" in the NBA.

This phrase was created by probably the best play by play announcer in history, Chick Hearn. He was the play by play announcer for the Lakers for a very long time.

He also invented the phrases "Slam Dunk" and "Airball", along with many others.

It means to make at phone call (from a pay phone) Pay phone cost much more but the expression is still around
