Affordable and lake michigan...hmm....I thought of the city, maybe youd want to consider a Chicago apartment near the lake? Rogers Park is a neighborhood that is very near the lake. This area is considered affordable. Loyola University has a campus there..the campus is right on the lake.
Evanston is lovely, but expensive.

Are you sure you want to move to the suburbs? If you're 26, you might serioiusly consider living in the city itself. The north part of the city along Lake Michigan, particularly Lakeview - the area from Diversey to Irving Park - is relatively affordable, and right on the lake.
If you're really looking for a suburb, consider Evanston - it's just north of the city, right on the lake, on several train lines, and is very safe and fun, with tons to do because of the nearby Northwestern University campus.

I lived in Glen Ellyn, but there is nothing for a young person to do there that compares to living closer to the city. Depending on where you'll work, Oak Park has a lot more going on and is a 15-minute train ride downtown to Chicago. There are plenty of places in Chicago both north and south side that have good areas to live in and have you reasonably close to the lake. Provide more info on where you'll be working and you'll get a better range of answers.

Evanston would be nice and close to the lake. Does it have to be a suburb? It sounds as if you would like the north side, as well. It does depend upon where you will be working, because that does affect the commute.

None of near north lakeside suburbs are cheap. Evanston is a very expensive place to live. They have very high taxes. To find a cheap lakeside suburb, you'll have to go up to Lake County.

All the 20 somethings I know are moving back into the city... buying a house in Plainfield didn't give them the social life they wanted... many ended up spending the weekend in the city anyway... the late night trains back to the burbs suck... so either you crash downtown or you go home early.... likely a Daly conspiracy!
