I am a quite and reserved person who thinks very deeply. I find that I do not get on with superficial people who talk about the weather, prices of things, what shoes their sister is wearing...etc

I find meaning in philosophy and the Arts. It is also where my passion lies.

Are you a deep thinker? And do you find that 'common' folk irritate you and cant seem to relate to them?

People also tell me that I live in my own world.

Yes, people are always asking me 'what are you thinking about'? I go off in to a little world of my own with my thoughts and it must show on my face. I find it's how I survive through life, especially when people are getting on my nerves. I love literature, philosophy and the visual arts too.

I have been accused of it a time or two and of wearing my feelings out on my sleeve, I try to do both the chit chat and the more deeper serious stuff as much as I can.

I don't like being under lots of stress, but lately I have been to some extent under false assumptions and being held to the point of things and with major restrictions on my own personal freedoms.

I can tell this in the way that I interact with other people, nothing really bad, but just the way that I am so serious and hard core and sometimes overreact by using a loud voice when I really should not be using it. It is because of stress and others expectations at this point in time.

So yes I am probably alone more then I might like to be right now, but being alone I also find can be a good thing and protects me in some ways too. I suppose that it depends on what the situation really is.

Thinking is a means to avoid people. Thinking allows us to avoid contact with others. Thinkers tend to disconnect from people. Why talk to someone else when you can talk to your self?

I don't know the expression "deep thinker". Thinking is thinking. Although thinking is an activity that requires separation from others regardless of what others talk about.

Thinkers tend to be arrogant as well, passing judgment on the nature and essence of others. Something can be said for social skills and engaging in social behaviour. I can only tolerate a "deep" conversation for a bit -- sometimes, I tell certain people to "lighten up".

Of course, there is nothing worse than when people won't do what we want them to including talking about things that we would like to talk about.

I think that is more a compatibility issue.

Given the number of people who spend time alone thinking, there are so many, that finding them is fairly easy. So, I consider thinking to be a choice to be alone.

Yes, I've been caught in the thinker's pose quite a few times.

As a general rule, I think that *all people* have something interesting to relate. You could try drawing those people in to a "deeper" conversation, or talk about one of their interests. If it is seriously a person who only cares about shoes, just avoid her. There are 6.5 billion other people in the world!

Small talk about weather/etc doesn't annoy me unless that's all the person talks about. The only thing that really bugs me is people who say the same thing over and over or obsess about one topic.

I wrote a story which addresses this question. Unfortunately Yahoo deleted it when they first deleted my account. There seem to be a lot of superficial people on here reporting the creative and the talented, and a lot of superficial people at Yahoo. The point of the story was that it is all very well sitting on a hill contemplating the universe, but you still have to eat and cloathe yourself and find yourself shelter. Life will not let you live in your own head. It just keeps interfering. I also think that you ought to take more of an interest in those "common" folk. Some of them may well have sophisticated understandings of things that you have barely contemplated.

When yer 135 ft. which is kind of deep down and see yer Oxygen gauge is in the Red, Ya pretty much have to think fast and paddle up faster. Einstein was a pretty deep thinker but couldn't tie his own shoes. Um no offense to one answer but experience only brings us knowledge, How we apply that knowledge, might create wisdom, but not always.

I too am a deep thinker. I love philosophy, history, geography, the sciences and the living world. I do not like mundane conversation, gossip which seems to be the highlight of most peoples lives including reality TV and soaps. These people have no respect for their intelligence and crave to know what others are doing with their lives, with little concern for their own. How sad they are.

Yes! I've got an example. Just today, a lady who collects cardboard boxes came into my store to purchase something. She was dressed in really raggy clothes. I gave her a discount on the purchase. My associate came up to me afterwards and asked why I gave a discount to that bum for. If I give her a discount, she will come back all the time. I thought about it for a second and replied. To me.. this person is not a bum. This person has devoted her life to recycling. She even have a big truck outside and two guys working for her to help load the cardboard. Think of how many trees she just saved with that truck load of cardboards. If there were more people like her around who cares about the earth. We would be in pretty good shape for many years to come. Thats why I gave her the discount.

Then they looked at me like I'm a retard. They still called her a bum. Shallow people kills me. Usually, when I see things and situations, I can see pass whats on the surface. I guess I'm always looking at the big picture. I have a feeling you and I think alike.

YES. Glad to know I am not alone. Although I would not refer to others who are not like me as 'common'! They don't irritate me but I find myself looking at them in wonder at how they can get so involved with trivia. I overheard a conversation last week in work:-
M " God it was awful wasn't it. what did your husband think?
D "Oh he was devastated! He couldn't believe it!"
(At this point I genuinely thought someone had died )
M "Yes, me to, he should never had missed that penalty"

My ex husband used to criticise me by saying that I think too deeply which is one of the reasons he's my ex.
I too love the arts, I am not so keen on philosophy because I find it circular thinking.

You sound a trifle snobby and unhappy too. Just accept you are different, other people are unique and everyone has something to offer society.

I understand where you are coming from. I often feel as though I'm the odd one out amongst the crowd.

I think its to do with what we rate as important. I find it difficult to become enthusiastic about clothes and make-up etc. but I love to discuss people's views on philosophy, religion and psychology.

All people have the potential to discuss things which require more thought than trivial matters, but its down to them to discover it for themselves.

Shallow thinkers irritate me and I have to take them with a pinch of salt. Then again, people who think too deeply are also difficult to relate to, as they question everything and you can't have an intelligent conversation with them.

For me, its all a question of balance. The perfect combination are people who are aware of trivial matters but can apply intellect to come up with a practical solution, have an open mind and are willing to seek beauty without looking in a fashion magazine.
