i would like to have a data base on my website that collects game stats info (from coach's entry) and then makes it viewable for the website visitors.
is there a free or simple service out there for this?

For what sport?
I would visit http://www.sourceforge.net and search for the name of your sport and the word "stats", e.g., "baseball stats," "soccer stats."
You might also try "baseball team", "soccer team", etc.

Microsoft Visual Web Developer is free and there are many tutorials which show how to use a SQLserver database in VWD.
The software is free but any site you develope with it must be run from hosting service which supports ASP 2.0
