I have read the the average age of the start of menstruation has dropped any where from 2 - 4 years in the western world in the last decade or so.

What is causing this and what will be the long term consequences for this generation of women?

growth hormones in the products we eat. the fact that we have so much to eat. possibly a better diet than our mothers and grandmothers had. also, a lot of the hair products and bath products have hormones in them( lavendar oils). i remember watching the news and little boys were developing breasts because of the shampoos and bath soaps being used.

long term consequences- women are waiting longer to get married and having careers come first. if they are menstruating sooner, they will most likely also go through menopause earlier. i think some women may miss the boat and lose out on having children. we'll have 40 year olds walking around with mustaches. yikes. that mayb a bit extreme. young women may start marrying young again to balance out the difference. i don't actually know. good question though. something to think about.

I know that there has been a lot of talk about hormones in the meat we are eating and I am sure that is a factor. The real answer is that we are more healthy than we were 50 years ago.

Think about the disease and general health condition of people 50 years ago. There wasn't a great level of health care and we have come a long way with being sanitary.

Years ago most women gave birth at home and that was because many women who gave birth in the hospital died. Doctors weren't washing their hands in between patients!

We live longer and are stronger than ever before.

What’s going on? A panel of academic, government and industry scientists has determined that there is "credible evidence" that some hormone-like chemicals can affect test animals' bodily functions at very low levels well below the "no effect" levels determined by traditional testing. Many suspect that hormone-mimicking chemicals, obesity and stress all contribute to precocious puberty. The chemicals, often called endocrine disruptors, are of particular concern because they’re everywhere -- in food, water, personal-care products, some plastics and many consumer goods.
What do Barbie dolls, food wrap, and spermicides have in common? And what do they have to do with low sperm counts, precocious puberty, and breast cancer?
We're destroying our environment & creating health problems with long unknown consequences.

Hormones in meat - check what you buy, chicken is full of hormones - I've seen shows on this very thing and it appears that's a huge factor in causing this problem! You can buy hormone-free meat, it'll just cost more and you have to check the labels carefully

Maybe people used to lie about this information way back in the dark ages, and now it is being reported to more medical professionals. Seriously, it could be all about the changes in reporting tactics and research study methods currently being used. It could even be because more and more doctors speak foreign languages and communicate more effectively with their clients. this is a weird question, good for you!
