Silly question basically I was talking with an American who got anyoyed by a Canadian who called himself American.
Well he is.
American is anyone who lives on the continent of America, as you no doubt know.
Confuses me why it is then that some Americans get anyoyed at that?
Are they just fools? Idiots? Hicks?

you cant really call us united statesians now can you. and united states citizen is a bit cumbersome. the reason that the US is referred to as america, and the people as americans, is because we are historically arrogant. (actually at this point its realyl just a 200 year old habit but origionally:) becausecanada was not a country during the entire existance of the united states, we that is they (our ancestors) decided that they were the only true americans. and technically they were the closest to a true american nation (simply because indian tribes existed in forms i woudlnt call nations) so a canadian calling himself an american at that time wouldve been stupid, since in reality he or she was actually just french or english (at this point the united states has been a country long enough that it is no longer populated by english settlers) so in some ways it makes sense to call members of the united states americans, we were here first..but then native americans and mexicans were here even before that.....

If a Canadian wants to call himself an American, it's okay with me...but by convention such labels refer to country and not to continent. I've been alive for several decades and I've never heard of anybody who was not a citizen of the United States of America calling themselves an American. A citizen of the U.S. is an American. A citizen of Canada is a Canadian. They could call themselves a North American, I suppose, but again, people usually refer to their country and not to their continent.

They are just......very close minded alot of the time; and rarely look outside themselves at the big picture, and other perspectives.
But there are some of 'us americans' who do not fall into the category you described......don't worry, all americans are not like that.

Well we may all live in North America, but it is called the United States of America, so maybe that's why he got mad. It's not called Canada America. it's a stupid thing to get mad about though...
