Don't have to have legs to stand up...

Coachwhips raise themselves up to get a better view of their area, perhaps this is what you're talking about... Alabama would probably have eastern coachwhips....

Both Black Racers(Coluber constrictor)and Eastern Coachwhips(Masticophis flagellum)will raise themselves up in order to get a better look around. Both are harmless snakes, of course, but that upright stance, especially in the Coachwhip with those gold hawk-like eyes, can be intimidating to someone who isn't comfortable around snakes.
