The 80's were more about celebrating life's excesses than crying about the shortcomings. New Wave replaced disco as the dance club favorite, and hair bands started to dominate pop rock.

I think the two most popular styles of music during the 80's were pop with synthesizers and arena metal. What was significant about both of those were that they were geared for nothing more than making money. It was also the dawn of MTV and it made flashy music videos and the band's/artist's look more important than the actual music. I think the late 70's and early 80's were when music started to really get commercialized.

New wave hit the scene and it represents the excitement and curiousity of advancement of technology. The personal computer was becoming more popular, and even movies like Tron and War Games paralleled these feelings.

Hair metal dominated the rock charts. Songs about parting and excess appealed to the masses in likely, the most explicive way in modern music history.

Rap was on the rise. Intersting beats and lyrics describe the life in the urban streets. The unique sound and strong meanings slowly made it's way into the mainstream.

Pop music was still pop music. Songs with mass appeal that dealt with topics that almost young adult can relate to. The difference was the importance of image. The advent of MTV changed the way pop music would be packaged.

the style was to get you ready and to get the parents ready for what is about to come, for example, teenagers in the 80s we all loved the pink floyd The wall record album, We had the lyrics in school, to let the teachers know and to be informed that We are not going to take it anymore, that We left the teachers knbow that this was the last days they will teach, and dont dare teach our kids, its also to prepare the parents and grownups that We are grownup and we know more about the lyrics then our parents and the idea and concept is space, We were in another world, then in the 90s all the rock groups went out the window, they failed, nobody is good
