That you are not finding the audio device in your control panel clearly indicates that you don't have the essential drivers for the sound card you are using. You need to visit the website of the manufacturer of your sound card and download the appropriate drivers. If you are using integrated sound, that is that you are not using a separate pci card for your sound, visit the website of the manufacturer of your motherboard and download the drivers there. Even if you think that you have the drivers, download it again and reinstall it. You should have your sound back. Ensure that the speakers are properly plugged up and powered on.
Moreover, to the idiot that suggested that you download the drivers for the speakers..SPEAKERS DONT USE DRIVERS..THEY ARE AS DUMB AS YOU ARE.
Enjoy your computer..

There's a big difference between System Recovery and System Restore.
If you did System Recovery you probably lost your drivers. Go to Device Manager and click on Sound. If there are a lot of yellow ?'s, you'll need to download those drivers (and probably some other ones while you're at it).
If you're in the habit of using Recovery you'll probably want to save your drivers to a flash drive or cd for future installations.

i have been through same thing my self
it takes time many ways to do this
1 at a time dont get ahead of your self
is best way
since you have did a restore
i wish i knew what kind as there are many to another date. factory settings and destructive recovery etc. After a restore
some things you have to activate again.
I suggest a destructive recovery
sounds scary i know
i was scared but it fixed everything
so go to where you found system restore
and look at options your not looking for factory settings or ealier date it may not say destructive recovery but when you see it you will know
FIRST PUT ON CD ALL IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS AND SOFTWARE YOU HAVE INSTALLED All that was there when purchased will come back
it is scary the first time but it works
all devices will reset If still have problems post again to activate some if any programs
that are not turned on
this will not hurt you computer at all
as i said many ways to do this, but this way you dont try to do setting that you dont know nothing about this could make it harder to fix what i told you worked for me
------------------------------------------
I want to help people and i ask
questions to.This is a good way to help
both of us.If my answers work for you
please vote me best answer.
This the only way i know i helped you.
Have a good day

If you did a system recover, the pc may no longer recognize your speakers.
Try to reboot without their being plugged in.
Then turn off the pc.
Now plug them in.
Now boot up.
Hopefully XP will recognize them and install their drivers.
If not you can go to the website of the speaker company and look around for drivers and/or help there.

It sounds to me like your speakers are busted. Just triple check that the speakers are in fact plugged into the right place. Check the computer's manual to see where and how to put in the wires for the speakers.

Perhaps you need a new audio driver. Try going to majorgeeks.com and selecting "Drivers" from the list of options on the left hand side

I had the same problem. you're going to have to put the system recovery disk in the computer. And it will reset the computer as if it were brand new again.
