President Kennedy's entire Presidency was built on hope and future possibilities, personal empowerment and service to your country. He personified youth and vigor and he was inspiring to everyone. He really re-energized everybody not just democrats and not just Americans. It was magical and somewhat like a fairytale.

When he was murdered in Dallas by this jobless ex-marine it was devastating to see the fairytale evaporate with a bullet out of Dallas. I see it as a significant point in history. From that point forward you never see the same optimism in people. Maybe somewhat with Reagan but not entirely. People are more circumspect now.

Lee Harvey Oswald didn't just kill an American President he killed all that he represented at that moment in time. It was devastating.

I am in the UK and at the time I heard about John F Kennedy's assassination I was sitting at home watching the television. There was a news programme on at the time, it was around 1830 hours, and the news reader announced that there was reports that President Kennedy had been shot. He did not have any further details but would keep us informed, a little while later he announced that President Kennedy had been shot and killed. It seems an simple word to say, shock was the first thing, shocked that someone should shoot a good man like President Kennedy. The President had a lot to live for and he would have probably gone on to bigger and better things for his country. After the shock, you think, why, who, and then feel sad for someone you only know in the newspapers or on the television had died. Then of course the man who shot President Kennedy, was shot himself, it was turning into a plot for a film not real life. You just felt sadness that the President was dead and he had left behind a wife and a family, and the whole nation of the USA to mourn their President, all well as others around the world.

Because up to that point, we had thought this country was prosperous, recovered from WW 2 and safely settled into the Baby Boom. Kennedy's assassination showed us that our highest elected figure could be killed very unexpectedly, the results could be covered up and the people deceived about the government, the pending war in Viet Nam, and civil rights issues. We learned that our president could send young men by the thousands to fight a senseless war, spy on our people, spin media, kill or eliminate those that the White House deemed a threat, and run roughshod over the beliefs, needs, and lands of other people. We became disillusioned with each successive President, and our economy shows it. What had once been a thriving, close community-oriented society replete with jobs, fair wages, and affordable homes & cars is now a hostile, fearful smog-filled cities of expensive houses and rampant unemployment.

Because the Kennedy administration was called the " New Camelot", and the country was going to start "a new" era. That ended on Nov. 22, 1963.
