Im American, and I was just wondering if it would be tacky to have a small traditional celebration on Independence Day? Should I invite the locals over to enjoy some beers and BBQ? My family typically told old stories about the revolutionary war and the day was revolved around family and country...So I would love my children to expirence it, but I am worried that others would see it as childish and tacky...any suggestions?

If you're afraid of being viewed as tacky, put an emphasis on the fact that it's for your kids. The fun thing about kids is that you can use them as an excuse to be as childish or tacky as you like! =O) Dress the event up as a children's barbeque, invite some of the local kids over, and invite some grown-ups over for yourself.

Why are you worried about what other people think? If it was a family tradition from your childhood that you particulary cared for, why not pass that on to your children? What's wrong with celebrating our nation's independence? Be proud of who you are and if people have a problem with that, ignore them and continue celebrating.

I live in a small village, we have American living here who holds a party on the 4th July, you shouldn't have much problems getting people to come.

If Hispanics can have Cinco de Mayo in America, there's no reason you should feel ashamed to celebrate July 4th in another country.

DO you still live in the US? Or are you in another country? I assume in another country so I think a SMALL gathering would be fun for the people you have met and for your kids too.
