Constipation in kids usually happens when they don't eat enough fibre, drink enough liquids, or get enough exercise. It also happens when children ignore the urge to have a bowel movement, which they often do out of embarrassment to use a public toilet, fear or lack of confidence in the absence of a parent, or unwillingness to take a break from play. Sometimes it's caused by medicines or a disease.
Positive reinforcement is the first step in giving kids the desire to begin regulation of their bowels. It is important to remove any negative thoughts about being constipated, especially if soiling has occurred.
Bowel retraining is the next step. The body has a natural reflex called the gastrocolonic reflex. After a meal, the colon undergoes peristalsis and attempts to clear the bowels. Have your child take advantage of the gastrocolonic reflex after each meal. Have him or her sit on the toilet for at least 10 minutes. It is often easier for the child if the feet are on the floor or on a footstool.
Give your child plenty of fluids and juices, such as prune juice. A well-balanced meal consisting of whole bran cereals, fruits, and vegetables with less sweets and desserts also helps.

The poor poppet. This must be very distressing. Pharmacists can provide a suppository to loosen the stool You really should check in with a health care worker to make sure all is ok. If the diet is healthy and lots of water, there could be an underlying problem.
The website below could help.

You could try adding fibre in the form of raw bran (you can get it from health-food shops - looks like flour). You sprinkle it on food - rice crispies, beans on toast, pizza, etc. Need to make sure also gets water, cos the fibre needs to fluff up in the bowel - so get making icepops!
Also, it's a long-shot, but they might like the flavour of Fybogel, which is like fibre in a drink (buy from pharmacy). It comes in orange and yellow - very sweet (sweetener rather than sugar), but the texture is weird and jelly.
It might be worth seeing a doctor you trust sometime and explain the whole situation to make sure there isn't a food intolerance or something else the others have missed. Most likely to be lack of fluid from sounds of it though.
Best wishes.

Please see articles below for more advice.
This site is excellent for reference, if you type in relevant words in search (eg constipation or diarrhoea, make sure spelling is correct), it'll give you a set of results, which are divided into different sections.
there's one section uner Kidzone which is specifiacally for children ( but you can look at others also). The Q&A at the end is very good.
It gives advice on natural remedies, alternative remedies & diet & supplements you an take.
Also tells you how to get to the root of the problem (underlying causes).
I think pineapple is very good for conspitation as it has an enzyme which helps with digestion.

Prune juice will do the trick. If your child drinks .2-3 glasses in the evening and 3 throughout the next they will be able to go. If they eat the actual prunes this will make the process quicker.Good luck

Figs and prunes are quite good.... Drinking cooked cabbage or carrot juice can also help to ease constipation. Stewed rhubarb or strawberries. Sipping hot water throughout the day and cutting down on meat if possible... will help to .... I eat all bran every other day and it soooo does keep me regular but i have also increased my fluids too. good luck! last resort is to take laxatives like senna .

Two weeks is way too long to go without a bowel movement. We get extremely anxious around surgery patients after day 4 (and most of them haven't eaten much more than jello). take your child to a hospital. There could be something seriously wrong with him/her. In addition try increasing your child's water intake, not juice/pop, just water. Dehydration is a common cause of constipation. Again, even if it is dehydration if it's been two weeks it might require IV rehydration.

I think you are extremely misguided in avoiding your GP if your child has a problem. Sure if you as an adult decide not to go that is your own business, but this sort of behavior might put your child at risk!
Sure constipation in children is seldom due to anything serious, but it would still be safer to get a check up. A trip to any pharmacy will get you simple over the counter medication for your child.

Constipation can come from many causes, but typically it's easy to cure. Laxatives are NOT the answer. Increasing the fiber in your diet will only help a little. What fiber does is hold moisture in the food as it passes through the intestine and helps to loosen up the compacted fecal matter, but this is most likely not the issue causing the problem.
The reason you get constipation is that the food you eat is not getting digested and it compacts creating toxins that manifest disease. Also, the gut people get as they age comes from this lack of digestion.
There are several aspects to this issue that come into play. You need to make sure your liver, gall bladder, and pancreas are working properly because these glands play a big part in how food is digested. Another aspect is the acidity of your stomach when food is ingested. The health of your intestinal flora is also a big factor.
Eliminate anything with chlorine in it, like tap water, because chlorine will kill your friendly bacteria (good intestinal flora). These bacteria are what digest your food, break it down, and as a biproduct excrete "B" vitamins. Eliminate all SOY products and Canola oil. These are very bad oils! They will slow your thyroid down and inhibit minerals that you need.
In order for your food to be broken down properly, your stomach needs to be acidic. Do NOT take ANY antacids! This garbage will turn your stomach alkaline. So called "acid indigestion" is from LACTIC acid created from rotting food due to the LACK of Stomach acid! As we age, we produce less and less stomach acid and that's where acid reflux and acid indigestion comes from (the lack of stomach acid). The drug companies, doctors, and pharmacists don't understand how the body works or they have another agenda!
If you are over 25 years old, you should take 2 Betaine HCL and 1 Activator after each meal. This will give you the best chance of digesting your food. If you eat cooked foods instead of all raw foods, you need this with each meal. This also kills the bad bacteria that you get in food.
Since you eat cooked foods, you should also take a digestive enzyme with each meal to put back what raw foods contain naturally.
Do not take antibiotics! They only promote macrophage production in the body and kill bacteria, not viruses, or fungus.
Antibiotics cause you to get fungus growth and may kill bacteria, but also drive the disease farther into the tissue and later in life, re-emerge as degenerative diseases. Only take antibiotics when you absolutely have no other alternative. The antibiotics kill the friendly flora in your intestines and promote constipation.
Your liver is responsible for producing bile and bicarbonate that is used in digestion of fats, etc. If it is not healthy, the bile production will not be good and your fats will travel through the intestines creating all kinds of issues, like bad cholesterol. The bile is created in the liver, then stored in the gall bladder where it is released when fats (oils) enter the small intestines. The bile combines with the fats and breaks them down into cholesterol & water. Depending on the oils you eat, the health of the liver and gall bladder, will determine the type of cholesterol you get.
If you do not have an acid stomach when food is there, no calcium, magnesium, or zinc will be absorbed in the jejunum (small intestine attached to stomach) and it will pass on down the intestines and out.
I would also suggest you eat a "Greens Mix," because this is loaded with vitamins.
Drink lots of quality water. I drink distilled everyday with great results.
I have found only one company that can provide the quality products you need listed above. Go to www.healthline.cc (not .com) and get the products suggested. You will be amazed at how the constipation will go away and the energy you will achieve because your food will be digested for a change.
