NYSE stocks have either 1, 2, or 3 letter designations. Repetition is allowed. How many companies could there be on the NYSE?

Thanks

Since there are 26 letters in the alphabet, there are 26 possibilities using only 1 letter.

If a company uses 2 letters, then there are 26 possibilities for the first letter and the same for the second. So for 2 letters there are 26 x 26 = 676 possible combinations.

For 3 letters, there are again 26 possibilities for each letter, so there are 26 x 26 x 26 = 17,576 possible combinations using 3 letters.

To find the total number of possibilities, simply add them up:

T = 26 + 676 + 17,576 = 18,278

So there could be a total of 18,278 companies listed on the NYSE.
