Double pumps work much better. I've tried several different types of pumps and several different brands.

Double electric pumps are proven to extract more milk more quickly, which for me is the most important thing since I don't want to fool with a machine any longer than I have to.

The Medela double electric is my favorite for ease of use, quality and comfort. I've never had any problems using it, no pain or anything. You can find your perfect setting level and change it throughout the pumping session.

I choose Medela over Ameda because the Ameda did not extract as much milk and the settings can not be fined tuned as well.

I got mine on Ebay from another mom who used hers for just a few months.

I'm sure a single pump would work fine, but I would recommend using the double. I pumped with my son and it was so much better using the double mechanical pump instead of the manual one. It went much more smoothly and of course much faster than doing one at a time. I couldn't tell you which brand is best because I rented one from a medical supply place and didn't even know what brand it was. However, my sister-in-law said Medela is a good brand to go with.

A double breast pump takes half the time because it does both breasts at once. If you're going to be pumping a lot, I would recommend the Medela Pump In Style or the Ameda Purely Yours, both electric pumps. They're almost identical pumps but the Ameda is usually cheaper (and your hospital might sell one or the other for a discount, too--they retail for around $300).

This is all stuff I've learned by reading and attending my breastfeeding class--I haven't used them yet, but those are the two always recommended to me. I'm going with the Ameda because my hospital sells it for $220.

I think if you are going back to work and plan to pump...spend the extra money on a double pump. My girlfriend loaned me a medela and that has been through two moms. If you borrow or rent a pump you MUST either buy new plastic parts or have them sterilized (a lot of times the hospital will do this for a small fee). The hospital might also rent pump. They are very costly but you don't want to pinch pennies and have the motor burn out.

I haven't personally had a baby, but used to be a Labor nurse. I would suggest using a double automatic pump (not manual) This can be a little harsh on your nipples, but if used correctly, not on too high of a setting, you will get great results. It will be faster and easier on you. Good luck.
