mid thigh unless you're at the beach. no one wants to see the top back of a 40 year old womans thigh regardless of what kind of shape you're in. and remember that quality of fabric can make the difference between tacky and classy. also i hate to make blanket statements but you should probably avoid denim unless they look fabulous on you and are tailored in a mature way (trouser cut perhaps) with no cheesy embellishments. keep it sexy.

My mom is close to your age, and she asked me a similar question recently....
For short shorts, I really don't reccommend jean shorts. They are generally worn by teenagers and women in their twenties. But khaki [I don't know if that's spelled right...] shorts are okay. A general guideline I gave my mom is that they shouldn't be above the middle of her thigh.
Bermuda shorts look good on most people, and I suggest getting a few pairs of those. That way, if you're wary about the short shorts, you have a backup!
I don't think anyone will ridicule you for wearing shorter shorts, especially if you've got nice legs! One way to find out, though, would just be to ask a friend of similar age what she thinks of the matter. That way, you'll know what other people may be thinking! =]

My opinion is that Bermuda shorts look great on those who are 40+. You sound very respectable and so of course outrageously short shorts is probably not the look for you. Even though you're in good physical shape, Bermudas will still look absolutely fabulous on you and they also make you appear taller. Best of luck!

I'm 29, but I will celebrate my 30th birthday in June. I'm also six feet tall so I can understand the legth problems. It just seems to be in the past few years that clothing companies realized that there are women besides their models who are taller than 5'9". Last summer I did the short denim skirt thing, partially because I was in good shape and partially because they were a substitute for shorts. (Tshirts and white sneakers with them, or a whitel blouse, white socks and loafers, depending on what was clean and where I was going, etc.) For now, I can fit into a pair of shorts that barely cover my rear. I don't care for them, as I think they're too short, but since they fit, I'll take them. Besides, at the rate my baby is going, they won't fit for too much longer. (I'm 19 weeks pregnant.) But, they were left over from when I wore 14s and wasn't pregnant, so they work. I also have a pair of knee length shorts that are also 14s and that I got about four years ago. I bought them at a dollar store (They originated from NY & Company). I didn't lilke them when I tried them on at home, but I never returned them. I'm more comfortable with the length of those, partially because my legs are out of shape. (I know I should be working out, especially with the baby, but it hasn't been happening. Might be somewhat of a good thing as I don't think I've gained 15 pounds yet.) Anyway, I'm comfortable with the longer length, and would like some more.
For me, I think it's a matter of me changing, not only as I've gotten older, but with my faith. I also have a size 14 skirt left over from my 14 days. (I saved my clothes thinking that if I didn't need them some day while pregnant, I might need them after.) It's four inches above my knee. Maybe three. When I wore it to church a couple of weeks ago, it just seemed really short, especially when I sat. Yet, it was a beggars can't be choosers moment and I figured that it otherwise looked good. (I wore it with the same white fitted shirt I wore with it four years ago. I like classic styles.) It did. I didn't look pregnant, just like I was a bit pudgy. Eh.
I don't think I would wear anything above mid-thigh, but that's just me. Personally, I think that if one feels uncomfortable even thinking about wearing something, then amybe she shouldn't. That's how I came to the conclusion with the shorter skirts and shorts.
Also, I like the skinnier fit knee length shorts, too. I had some last summer and they have vertical stripes which just made me look taller and skinner. (If I wore it with my black fitted blouse, I looked even skinnier.) If I didn't need materintiy clothes, I would probably look into buying a pair of those, probably in kahaki, as it's a good classic versitile color. (Maybe, depending on the style, good enough to wear to church, but I'm not comfortable wearing shorts Sunday mornings.) I figure I can't go wrong with a pair of kahaki shorts of good length (the afore mentioned too short ones are kahaki), with a white shirt and white sneakers, or kahaki skirt or pants with a white blouse, white socks and loafers. Even a denim skirt, too.
Anyway, I hope I've helped.

I think you should wear whatever length of shorts you like except those short short ones. Those even look bad on ANY age.

while you're mushy with 4" inner seam shorts, positioned on them. You sound extra healthful, and should no longer be too in touch approximately it. attempt getting a length 8 and having them taken in quite. it is going to likely be extra mushy than donning shorts that are too comfortable.

I prefer hair that will is shoulder length or longer, As well as since that men who like ladies are more often then not right, they like long hair because that looks more feminine, as most guys have short hair.
