I have WEP security thru my Linksys wireless router. My laptop can connect to outside unsecured networks but I can't fully connect to my own for some reason. My WEP password is correct and I even tried to add the laptop to my home network using my USB flash via Windows Vista and I still can't connect. Please help! Thanks!

When I choose "REPAIR" on my laptop, it reads, "Windows could not finish repairing because the following action cannot be completed. RENEWING YOUR IP ADDRESS."

The SSID is enabled. What else could I try?

I played around with my firewall settings to the point that I turned off my firewall (on Norton Internet Security) and turned off my Intrustion protection and I still couldn't connect. :(

I played around with the security but it got worse. All my wireless devices wouldn't connect and even my 1 wired desktop stop working. I figured my router finally gave out after about 2-3 years so I bought a new one and everything is fine now. Thanks to all...

Go into Vista Network and sharing center, select your network and put a checkmark in Always Connect to this network. You also need to make sure that the SSID broadcast is not disabled in the Router setup. While you're in the router setup check your wireless settings in the router to see if everything is set correctly. Disable the SPI firewall if you have it and depends on your high speed connection you need to enable DHCP server or manually assign an IP address to your laptop.
EDIT: Since you can't renew your IP address, you may want to look at your DHCP setting in your router setup screen. It need to set on enabled so that it can assign the IP address for your pcs. You can also try to power cycling your modem and router to force the router to renew your IP address. Shutdown your pc, disconnect power cables from modem and router, connect power to modem first, wait for it to reboot--usually around 1 minutes, next connect power to router and reboot your pc. I would also try to uninstall Norton Security suite to see if it help.

There does seem to be a problem with this in XP particularly. Try it wit the encryption off as a test. If this works try changing the type of encryption, some cards play better with one type than the others. Also on some cards a firmware or software update may help. Check also that the exception for dhcp is added in the advanced firewall settings.

First thing turn off WEP in the router and try to connect. If you can connect with WEP off then you know it a problem with the security function. If you cant then you know its most likely in the laptop and we can continue from there......
