Joann currently has a machine on sale for $79.00, which has worked just fine for me.

I bought my first machine from a charity thrift store for $25.00. I worked very well for nearly 10 years, when I inherited my Mom's, and I donated the first one back to the charity store. They probably got another $25.00 for it.

$300 is too much. Walmarts or Joannes have good machines for around $100. If I were you I would try Joannes first, because some have a repair service. That way if you break or (more likley) jam up something, you will not be stuck. Look for one that is flat under the needle as oppposed to curved. You can handel the fabric better on a flat surface. ALso there are good used ones for $15 to 25 in the newspaper's classified. If you go that route make sure the instruction book is there and take a piece of fabric along and insist that they let you sew before you buy. I bought a great used machine back in 1974 (White brand) and I am STILL sewing with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a sewing teacher, I have used almost all brand names and some not brand names...... If they sew, they are just fine for beginners...... as you become better, you will naturally want a machine that has all the different bells and whistles.
In my opinion, I find Brother has got the best for the money. Wal Mart sells them... you can always upgrade once you understand all the methods of sewing.........

Brother, White and Singer are all good. Wal-Mart has the best prices. You can buy on-line; sometimes they have free shipping.
