They used to be. Hard to mass-produce them in marble, so they're made of glass.
Hey, they're "glass marbles," a great new oxymoron!

Who says, good ones are, and some are made of glass, hand blown, and cost over 100 ea. You just need to know where to look. Our marbles came from a rock show and were hand made. The were given to my husband as a thank you gift, and he was thrilled to get them just like any other kid would be.

Good question. It is much too expensive to take marble and use it on play balls. It would be silly. Also, it is easier to form a ball with glass.

marble is a rare resource and it would be too expensive to make the little balls out of that rock

I think they should have a glass name. Also, I agree with the first two answer: too expensive
