James, squash plants always produce more male flowers than female.....the male flowers have thinner stems and no ovary at the base, the female has a larger stem and a small ovary at the base.

Are the "little ones but they wilt and fall off..." actually developing fruit or just the flowers. Male flowers just die away. If you are getting little fruit but they fail to grow I first think of a pollination problem. I hope you are getting good pollination for those flowers.....see insect activity about?

Are you seeing other insects around? Bugs or beetles? Both the squash bug and the cucumber beetle will feed on the plant's juices causing fruit abortion. There are several diseases that come to mind; powdery mildew and a bacterial wilt but they tend to develop over the entire plant.

I hope your problem is just lack of pollinating insects which you can remedy with a cotton swap that your first twirl around the male flower and then twirl it around several female flowers.

I be in central florida, the first flowers are usually male and do not bear fruit. After they have passed on the female flowers come in and mine are cranking out squashes as I type.

Bad part of florida farming is the soil, or rather the lack of soil. we have sand. To harvest more than one fruit per plant the soil must be amended with organic matter to hold the nutrients and moisture so the plant roots may feed. I use composted grass clippings, table waste, horse poop from the farm across the street, ground up oak tree leaves, Another thing you might consider is taking a pH readingof your soil's acidity/alkaline level. That determines if you can grow if the pH level of the soil, and the pH needed by the plant.

telephone your local extension service office and speak to t he gardener agent Had you listed your county, I have access to most of the agent phone numbers for Florida

what i do with my squash flora is i take the male plant existence off the plant and touch the pistil to the stamen. the female flower is on the tip of the squash. this pollen gets in there and works like magic. i had lots of squash i could not save up with pollinating so those i ignored stayed small and those i pollinated have been given extensive. i take advantage of composted cow manure blended with the earth. each and every couple months sprinkle 10-10-10 fertilizer close to the backside of the plant. not lots nevertheless. i many times purchase Scotts kind 10-10-10 flower and vegetable nutrition at Ace hardware.
